Creating New Posts
Friday, October 30, 2009As an editor within a community on the Engage web site you are able to author various types of posts: News, Links, Events, and Documents. To create a particular type of post you will first have to log into the Dashboard. Once you have logged in, you will see a number of tabs across the top of the page. To create a new post, click on the Publish Form tab. Each post requires you to Add a Title, Summary, Body, Categories, and Tags. While viewing the Publish page you will see secondary tabs where you will be able to add these things.

First, add a Title for your new post. You will find it on the Publish Form tab. Moving down the page you will see an area for the Summary. The summary should just be a few sentences long and capture the gist of the full post.
Next move down the page to the Body field. This is where the full text of the post should be typed. While you are adding text you can use the formatting tools above the Summary field to create, bold, italic, and underlined text as well as insert images and links into the post. Once you’ve finished writing the text, move to the Categories tab and select a category for your post. This will make the post appear under the corresponding menu item in the right sidebar. After selecting a category, move to the Tags tab and add words in the Tag Field to help readers who are searching for a particular topic to find your post. Tags are displayed in the right sidebar under the menu and take users to a page of all posts that have the corresponding tag that was clicked.
All that is left to do is to submit your post. Use the SUBMIT button in the middle of the page to do this.

Posting to Specific Categories
News
The only thing to keep in mind when posting to the News category is to remember to specify the category as NEWS on the Categories tab.

Links
To post a link to the site remember to set the category to LINKS and use the URL and Link Name to place the address of the web page and the name of the link (respectively). The URL will be the web page you want to link to and the Link Name will end up being the click-able text.

Events
To post an event be sure to set the category to EVENTS along with date, time, and details for the event.

Documents
To post a document, set the category to Document, and use the Upload File button in the middle of the page to upload your document to the “Documents” directory.

A new window (or tab) will open and prompt you to find the image you want to locate on your hard drive. Find the file and set the Destination Directory to DOCUMENTS and Upload the file. On the next page you should see confirmation text stating that your upload was successful (in green). You’ll be asked if you want to resize your image (good if it is very large) and if you want the file to be placed in the entry or if you want a URL only. Select URL ONLY if you are uploading a document so that you have a click-able link to access the file with. If you are uploading a picture you can select EMBEDDED IN ENTRY. Click the Place Image and Close Window button to complete the process.
