Geophysical Institute (GI)
Thursday, January 29, 2009At the GI, the diversity of our research focus is reflected by our disciplinary-based, functional groupings of faculty and research staff. These divisions are: space physics and aeronomy, atmospheric sciences, snow, ice, and permafrost, seismology, volcanology, and tectonics and sedimentation. Along with an ubiquitous, cross-discipline remote sensing group, these research divisions reflect the range and diversity of the active scientific research projects which reach from the center of the sun to the center of the earth and beyond. Our 60 faculty, together with approximately 80 graduate students and associated undergraduates carry out research projects at high latitudes relating to our location within the Arctic.

Institute for Northern Engineering (INE)

INE conducts research in all areas of engineering, including, but not limited to: civil and environmental, petroleum, mining, geological, electrical, computer, and mechanical engineering. INE fosters opportunities for faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and students to tackle these engineering challenges. INE focuses on basic and applied research and development, as well as research outreach.

Interior Alaska Green Star
Thursday, January 29, 2009Our goal is to capture a larger percentage of Interior Alaska’s electronic waste before it hits the landfill, because 95% of the material in items like the computers is recoverable. In our first year we collected 7 tons of electronics and last year we collected a total of 25.4 tons of electronic waste.

Alaska Energy Plan Published
Wednesday, January 28, 2009The State of Alaska has published its proposal for grant allocation from the Alaska Renewable Energy Fund. This money will fund the construction of a wide range of alternative energy projects throughout the state. The total proposed expenditure from the State of Alaska is $100 million, with a federal match of approximately $300 million.
